Will my car turn off while I am driving if I blow a fail or miss a rolling retest?

No, the interlock cannot possibly turn off your car, especially while you are driving.  If you blow a failed breath test into the machine, or miss the rolling retests, your machine will go into a 5-day lockout countdown – you will need to have your machine serviced before the end of the countdown.  Call the service center and we can help you.

Can other people drive my car?

Yes, other people may drive your vehicle; however, they will need to blow into the interlock machine just as you do to get the vehicle started, as well as take the rolling retests when they are required. Remember, the interlock is on your account – you are responsible for all breath samples presented or missed on your interlock.

Why did I get a failed reading when I haven’t had any alcohol?

There are a few possibilities, but remember that the Intoxalock interlock uses fuel cell technology, which means it is alcohol specific. That being said, any alcohol presented into the machine will register an alcohol reading. If you use mouthwash that contains alcohol (many brands contain a high level of alcohol) and then immediately blow into the interlock, you will likely register a very high fail. Please be sure to make sure your mouth is clear of food, smoke and beverages before blowing into your interlock. If needed, rinse your mouth with water before presenting a breath sample.

Also, keep in mind, if you have consumed alcoholic beverages the previous night, you may still have residual alcohol present in your system. This can cause alcohol readings high enough on your interlock to cause failed breath samples the next morning.

How often do I need to service my machine, and what happens if I don’t get it serviced in time?

The state of Washington requires a minimum of 60-day intervals for servicing your machine.  If you have made payment arrangements with our office, you may limit your normal servicing times to 60 days; otherwise, the 30-day servicing option is available.

If you do not service your machine in time – whether for your normal servicing or due to a lockout – your machine will prevent you from starting your vehicle until it has been serviced.  This means you will need to tow your vehicle into a service center to reset your machine.

What is a recalibration and when is my next recalibration for my interlock?

A recalibration is when we download all of the activity from your machine, calibrate the unit with a measured alcohol sample to ensure it is reading within acceptable limits (making sure it is accurate).

When you have your machine serviced you will receive a reminder slip of paper for the next recalibration date.  Your machine will begin counting down during the last 6 days to remind you to get your machine in for servicing.  If you are not sure, please feel free to call us – we can look up your next service date in our system.

Will the unit damage my car?

Definitely not!  Out trained and certified technicians take the utmost care in properly installing the interlock system in your vehicle.  We never drill any holes or cause any damage to any part of your vehicle.

When can I get my interlock removed?

This is a question that you will need to contact the DOL (Department of Licensing) about.  The DOL will not give out this information to interlock providers, as your information at the DOL is personal.  Keep in mind that most interlock requirements are for a minimum of 1 year; however, there are also interlock requirements for 2, 5, & 10 years.

When you are ready for removal, please contact our service center to schedule an appointment.  Keep in mind there are new laws and regulations regarding the removal if interlocks – please check with our service center to see if you have any additional requirements.
